What is Bastione Riva?

Bastione Riva del Garda, usually called Bastione, is a fortress built at the beginning of the 16th century to protect the town and its inhabitants after Venetian rule over Riva ended. French troops under General Vendôme destroyed it in 1703. The structure was later restored under the supervision of the Architectural Heritage Office of the Autonomous Province of Trento.
Today, the grey-stone landmark stands above Riva and looks out over Lake Garda. It is a short walk from the harbour along a road through the black pine forest on Mount Rocchetta. To place the climb within a town visit, pair it with a wander through Riva’s historic centre.
How do you get from Riva to Bastione?

From Riva’s historic centre, the walking route starts on Via Monte Oro. For the approach to Bastione, head to Via al Bastione; the paved climb takes about 20 minutes. You can also take the panoramic lift, which departs from Via Monte Oro and connects the historic centre with the landmark.
Walking from Via al Bastione
The route climbs through the hillside on cobblestones and porphyry slabs. Its slopes range from 8% to 10%, so allow about 20 minutes for the approach. From the harbour, a road through the black pine forest leads toward Bastione.
Taking the panoramic lift
The lift’s ascent is 208 metres long, rises 130 metres and takes about three minutes. It carries up to 17 people per trip. One wheelchair or pram/pushchair is allowed per trip. Dogs can ride free with a muzzle and leash; only one dog is allowed per cabin.
A single ride costs €6. Return tickets cost €10 from 1 June to 30 September and €9 during the rest of the year. Children under 120 cm tall and people with disabilities ride free. People with disabilities must travel with a paying person, and free tickets must be requested from service staff rather than at the ticket office.
What is the route like, and what can you see?

The walk to Bastione is a paved uphill route, with cobblestones and porphyry slabs underfoot and slopes of 8% to 10%. Once there, the panoramic spot is level and paved with cobblestones and tiles, with views over Riva del Garda and Lake Garda.
If you want a longer outing, the route toward Capanna Santa Barbara follows signs for SAT 404. The full Bastione–Santa Barbara hike is 2.8 km and takes 1 hour 45 minutes, with 590 metres of ascent and 60 metres of descent; those figures cover the full hike, not just the climb to Bastione.
Check the weather, stay on marked paths, avoid shortcuts, and turn back if conditions or the route exceed your ability or equipment. For a broader itinerary that combines town walking and the lakeside, see this one-day Riva del Garda route.
