The Rocca beside Riva’s harbour

Rocca di Riva is a castle with four corner towers, stone-and-mortar walls and a small bridge crossing the canal. Water once surrounded the complex, which stands by Lake Garda in the town’s central visitor area.

The fortress is also the setting for MAG Museo Alto Garda. From the Rocca, you can continue into the historic centre of Riva and its surrounding streets.

A short history of the fortress

A short history of the fortress

The Rocca was first mentioned in 1124, when the local community received permission to build a new fortress, or castrum novum, on Lake Garda’s banks. Around the mid-14th century, a quadrangular fortified structure with corner towers and an inner courtyard was added around an earlier tower.

In the early 15th century, the castle served both as a military garrison and as the seat of the city’s captains. Riva and the Sommolago came under Venetian rule in 1440 and remained under it until 1509.

Later, during the rule of Prince-Bishop Bernardo Cles from 1514 to 1539, the Rocca was modernized. Surviving fragments of fresco decoration date from 1535–1539.

The building changed again in the second half of the 19th century, when it became barracks. The corner towers were lowered, the south wing was rebuilt and the interior structures were substantially altered.

The museum connection

The museum connection

MAG Museo Alto Garda occupies the Rocca and brings together art, archaeology and local history. Its permanent sections are the Art Gallery, Archaeology and History, alongside spaces for temporary exhibitions.

The collections include Copper Age statue-stelae found at Arco, finds from excavations at the Ledro pile-dwelling sites, and material from the archaeological area of San Martino di Campi. The history section covers the development of tourism in the Upper Garda area and events between the two World Wars.

For a museum visit, admission is listed as €5.00, with free admission for Garda Guest Card holders. The museum is at Piazza C. Battisti 3/A, 38066 Riva del Garda.
